Al-Shabaab militants allegedly attacked the African Union force’s military facility in Somalia on Friday.

The terrorist organization has been fighting a jihadist insurgency against the nation’s weak central authority for more than 15 years.

The army base in Bulo Marer, 120 kilometers (75 miles) south-west of the capital Mogadishu, “came under Al-Shabab attack,” according to a statement posted on Facebook and Twitter by the AU force known as ATMIS.

The statement read, “ATMIS forces are currently assessing the security situation.” There have been no recorded casualties.

In an operation supported by ATMIS and US airstrikes, the army and militias known as “macawisley” retook large areas of land in the unstable country’s center.

The insurgents have persisted in attacking military and civilian targets with fatal force despite the successes made by the pro-government forces.

In the biggest Al-Shabaab assault since the offensive’s inception last year, two vehicle bombings targeting the education ministry in the capital Mogadishu resulted in 121 deaths in October.
