Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has warned that his side must brace for a “difficult game” as they prepare to take on Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final of the FIFA Club World Cup on Wednesday.
The England international, who joined the Spanish giants this season, issued the warning shortly after Madrid’s 3–1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in Saturday’s quarter-final fixture, which sealed their place in the last four.
Speaking at his post-match press conference, Alexander-Arnold reflected on his recent encounter with the French side, having faced them during last season’s UEFA Champions League while at Liverpool.
“I played PSG this season and they were outstanding,” he said. “Of course, it is going to be a difficult game. We are both in the final four and we both deserve to be here.”
The 25-year-old added that anything could happen in knockout competitions and called on his teammates to stay focused and recover quickly ahead of the clash.
“In knockout football, anyone can beat anyone,” he stated. “We will work hard to recover and prepare for a difficult game. Let’s see who comes out on top and who are the best team.”
Alexander-Arnold, now under the tutelage of Spanish manager Xabi Alonso, has quickly become a key figure in Madrid’s defensive line since making the switch from Merseyside.
Meanwhile, PSG secured their own spot in the semi-final after a commanding 2–0 win over German champions Bayern Munich, setting up a mouthwatering tie against the Spanish champions.
With both sides boasting elite talent and recent continental success, Wednesday’s clash is shaping up to be one of the tournament’s standout fixtures.
