Tension flared on Tuesday at the National Assembly complex in Abuja as former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, confronted police officers during a protest demanding electoral reforms.
Amaechi, who joined scores of demonstrators at the federal legislature, openly challenged security operatives as protesters pressed their demand for the real-time electronic transmission of election results. The issue has remained a flashpoint since the Senate rejected the proposal during deliberations on the ongoing electoral reform process.
The protest, tagged “Occupy the National Assembly,” drew Nigerian youths to Abuja, with participants describing the Senate’s decision as a major setback to credible elections and democratic transparency in the country.
A day earlier, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, also joined the demonstrators in a show of solidarity, reinforcing calls for comprehensive reforms aimed at restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
The demonstration comes amid mounting public pressure on lawmakers to reverse their stance, as concerns over electoral integrity, transparency, and the credibility of future elections continue to dominate national discourse.
