Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has fired a scathing attack on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, warning that Nigerians must not expect power to be handed to them without a determined political challenge.
Speaking at the national convention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja, Amaechi charged party leaders to urgently rally behind a credible and viable candidate ahead of future elections.
He accused the current administration of deepening insecurity across the country, pointing to rising cases of killings, kidnappings, and displacement of citizens.
Amaechi also questioned what he described as growing restrictions on democratic rights, particularly the alleged denial of citizens’ freedom to assemble.
“ADC must decide on a viable candidate. President Tinubu will not give us power,” he declared.
In a fiery remark, the former minister challenged the government’s democratic credentials.
“How can a man who claims to be a democrat be stopping democracy?” he asked.
Amaechi did not hold back as he criticised what he described as a culture of impunity among political actors, accusing some officials of prioritising personal gain over national interest.
“If you accuse me of anything I didn’t do, I will defend myself. But these people do not care. What they care about is money,” he said.
He called on ADC chieftains to close ranks and present a united front capable of confronting the current administration, warning that disunity within the opposition could weaken efforts to bring about political change.
His remarks underscore rising political tensions and growing calls for opposition realignment as Nigeria gradually moves toward the next electoral cycle.
