Amnesty International, a human rights organization, asserted on Thursday that the Nigerian Police had collaborated with Hope Uzodinma, the governor of Imo State, to abuse Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), during the union’s protest in Imo.
The right organization made this accusation in a post via its official X Twitter, claiming that the Imo administration, together with the police, intimidated the labor union on Wednesday by using force and repressive tactics.
“In Owerri, the police @PoliceNG, working with the Imo state government, beat and blindfolded Mr. Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).” An Amnesty International post stated, “Using violence and repressive tactics to intimidate the labor union is a new unacceptable dimension of impunity.”
According to Naija News, Ajaero suffered physical violence during the union’s demonstration on Wednesday in Imo.
There were rumors that Nigerian Police force members had physically assaulted the head of the union.
The police, however, denied the reports, calling them rumors that the union head had been placed under preventive detention after receiving information of a potential mob attack.
Uzodinma, who also denied being involved in the incident, claimed that attempts had been made to blackmail his government in advance of the governorship election scheduled for November 11.
