The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Federal Government to clamp down on Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), over his recent verbal attacks on President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Factional chairman of the party in Rivers, Tony Okocha, issued the demand in a statement on Wednesday, describing Sowore as a “rascal and nitwit” bent on dragging the nation’s leadership into disrepute.
Okocha argued that spreading falsehoods with intent to defame political leaders undermines public trust and could amount to treasonable felony. He stressed that attempts to incite citizens against the government through malicious claims threaten the foundation of Nigeria’s democracy.
His reaction followed Sowore’s recent remarks in which he branded President Tinubu a “criminal” and accused Wike of acquiring multimillion-dollar properties in Florida, United States, with public funds.
“In every democracy, criticism is welcome, but what Nigerians must reject are deliberate lies, propaganda, and attempts to defame under the guise of activism,” Okocha said. He accused Sowore of building his career on “fabricated stories and half-truths” through his Sahara Reporters platform, which he alleged is notorious for blackmail and extortion.
He added that Sowore’s “baseless allegations” reflect the bitterness of a politician “rejected at the polls and drowning in irrelevance.”
