Led by Lionel Messi Tuesday’s Group C match of the 2017 FIFA World Cup at the Lusail stadium saw Saudi Arabia shockingly overcome Argentina 1-2.
Argentina took the lead as Messi successfully scored a penalty in the 10th minute. Saleh Alshehri’s close-range goal in the 48th minute gave Saudi Arabia the lead back. The stadium roared five minutes later when Salem Aldawsari scored a curler to put Saudi Arabia on the road to a historic victory.
Argentina’s loss means that they have now fallen short of Italy’s 37-game winning streak.
Argentina entered the World Cup in excellent shape, having gone 36 games without a loss under manager Lionel Scaloni. The streak for La Albiceleste began way back in 2019. The last time Argentina lost before today was on July 3, 2019, against Brazil, 1239 days ago. This is also the second time Argentina has lost a World Cup match after leading at half time (1930 against Uruguay).
Before the win versus Saudi, Argentina recorded 25 wins and settled for 11 draws. It featured the title-winning run at the Copa America 2021, where Argentina overcame Brazil 1-0 in the final to clinch the trophy.
Argentina, who had previously won the World Cup in 1978 and 1986, lost to Germany in the World Cup final in 2014, and four years later, in Russia, it was eliminated by France in the pre-quarterfinals.
