According to reports, armed robbers attacked Otukpo town in Benue state on Friday, killing an undetermined number of people.
An eyewitness, a local, who attested to the occurrence, stated that the robbers broke into four banks at approximately 2:00 p.m. and continued their operations until 4:00 p.m.
According to Eyewitness, the robbers also broke into a police station close to the banks, disarming every officer who was on duty.
The eyewitness continued by saying that the financial institutions targeted by the criminals were First Bank, United Bank of Africa (UBA), Stanbic Bank, and Zenith Bank.
“They looted UBA, First Bank, Zenith Bank, and Stanbic Bank in broad daylight. Even the vigilantes were disarmed when they broke into the police station next to the banks.
“One of my friends lost their life in the attack. In fact, we even exchanged waves when I saw him this afternoon.
Some eyewitness stated that the criminals operated unopposed and destroyed numerous bank facilities and are still amazed how that could happen because of the four roads that crisscross Otukpo, there are police and military checkpoints.
The state’s police spokesman, Sewuese Anene, acknowledged the attack when reached but stated she had not yet received any information about the incident.
Anene stated, “I know there is an attack, but I don’t have any details yet.”
