Atletico Madrid and Arsenal finished level in their Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday night. Both teams scored from the penalty spot to end the match 1-1 at the Metropolitano. This result sets up a massive second leg in London, with a place in the final at stake.
The match began with high energy as the home fans threw rolls of toilet paper onto the pitch. While the game was more tactical than the high-scoring thriller between PSG and Bayern Munich the night before, it still had plenty of drama. Arsenal took the lead in the 44th minute after David Hancko fouled Viktor Gyokeres in the box. The Swedish forward stepped up and powered his strike past goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Atletico Madrid fought back early in the second half. A VAR review confirmed a handball by Ben White, giving the Spanish side their own penalty in the 56th minute. Julian Alvarez expertly converted the chance, firing the ball into the top corner. Antoine Griezmann nearly won the game later on, but his powerful effort hit the crossbar.
Arsenal almost had another penalty late in the game when the referee pointed to the spot after a challenge on Eberechi Eze. However, the decision was overturned following another VAR review. Atletico captain Koke noted, “We had chances to win it, but it will all be decided in the second leg.”
The Gunners played without several stars in their starting lineup. Bukayo Saka began on the bench due to an injury, while Kai Havertz missed the trip entirely. Both teams now look forward to the return leg on May 5. The winner will progress to the final in Budapest to face either PSG or Bayern. Gyokeres remained confident, saying: “At home with our fans, it’ll be different for sure.”
Who do you think has the upper hand heading into the second leg at the Emirates Stadium?
