Aston Villa booked their place in the Europa League final after a dominant 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in Wednesday’s second-leg semi-final clash at Villa Park.

The impressive result secured a 4-1 aggregate triumph for Unai Emery’s side as the club moved closer to winning its first major trophy in 30 years. Villa will now face Freiburg in Istanbul on May 20 after the German side defeated Braga 3-1 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate.

After losing the first leg 1-0, Aston Villa responded brilliantly in front of their home supporters. The hosts attacked with intensity from the opening whistle and finally took the lead in the 36th minute when Ollie Watkins tapped home after brilliant skill from Emiliano Buendia.

Villa continued to control the game after the break, and Buendia doubled the advantage in the 58th minute from the penalty spot following a foul by Nikola Milenkovic on Pau Torres.

Captain John McGinn then sealed the memorable victory with two quick goals in the 77th and 80th minutes, sending most of the 43,000 fans inside Villa Park into celebration. Among those in attendance was Villa supporter Prince William.

The Europa League final now offers Aston Villa the chance to end a long wait for silverware. The club last won a trophy in 1996 when it lifted the League Cup, while its greatest European success came in 1982 when it became European champion.

Manager Unai Emery, a four-time Europa League winner, will hope to guide Villa to another historic achievement in Istanbul.

Can Unai Emery deliver Aston Villa’s first major trophy in three decades?
