|By Chinwendu Nwani – Atiku Abubakar mourns Kola Oyewo following the death of the veteran Nigerian actor and scholar, who died on Friday.
The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, expressed sadness over the loss of the respected theatre icon. Kola Oyewo’s son, Adetoyese Oyewo, announced his death.
Reacting in a statement shared on his X account on Saturday, Atiku described the late actor as a legendary thespian whose contributions to African theatre would never be forgotten.
Atiku Abubakar mourns Kola Oyewo as a performer whose work inspired generations of actors, scholars and lovers of African storytelling.
He praised Oyewo’s memorable portrayal of King Lapite in the acclaimed movie Saworoide, saying the role immortalised his talent and commitment to the arts.
According to Atiku, the veteran actor’s death has created a significant gap in Nigeria’s theatre community.
“A great void has been left in Theatre Arts,” he said.
The former vice-president added that Oyewo would be greatly missed by audiences across the world who appreciated African stories and culture.
Furthermore, Atiku extended his condolences to the actor’s family, friends and admirers. He described Oyewo as an exceptional dramatist and teacher who used his craft to promote social consciousness.
Atiku Abubakar mourns Kola Oyewo at a time when tributes continue to pour in from across Nigeria’s creative industry, reflecting the actor’s influence on theatre, film and education.
