Atletico Madrid secured a 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the 2026/2027 UEFA Champions League at the Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday, adding to the pressure on United manager Michael Carrick.

Atletico made a flying start, taking the lead inside the opening minute through Pablo Barrios. The midfielder paid tribute to captain Koke, whose mother had died earlier that day.

The Spanish side, which lost away to Liverpool in its opening European match, had to wait until the 79th minute to score again. Ademola Lookman found the net shortly after Manchester United defender Leny Yoro received a red card, leaving the visitors with a difficult task.

The defeat extended Manchester United’s disappointing run of form. The Old Trafford club has now gone five matches without a win and has recorded only one victory in its last seven outings.

The result increases the scrutiny on Carrick as United look to recover in Europe and improve their performances. Their next Champions League assignment will be an away trip to Italy to face Como.

Despite the setback, Carrick defended aspects of his team’s performance and urged people to view the result in the context of a difficult European fixture.

“Tonight is a one-off game in judgement, it is the Champions League and a tough place to come. We are doing certain things OK,” Carrick told broadcaster Amazon Prime.

For Atletico, the win provides a valuable response after their opening defeat and keeps their European campaign moving forward. Their early goal and late second strike proved enough to secure all three points against a United side struggling for consistency.
