Atletico Madrid placed one foot in the Champions League semifinals on Wednesday night with a clinical 2-0 first-leg victory over Barcelona. Despite a dominant start from the Catalan hosts, the match swung decisively in favor of Diego Simeone’s men following a late first-half red card for Pau Cubarsi. Goals from Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth ensured that the Rojiblancos returned to Madrid with a commanding advantage, leaving Hansi Flick’s side facing a monumental task at the Metropolitano next week.

The early stages at the Camp Nou were defined by Barcelona’s attacking trio of Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, and Marcus Rashford. Rashford, handed a start in the absence of Raphinha, was particularly lively, seeing a goal ruled out by VAR for a narrow offside against Yamal. However, Atletico’s trademark disciplined five-man defensive line held firm. The game changed in the 42nd minute when Cubarsi was sent off for a professional foul on Giuliano Simeone. From the resulting free kick, Julian Alvarez silenced the home crowd with a sensational 25-meter strike into the top corner.

In the second half, Barcelona attempted to rally despite the numerical disadvantage, with Rashford even striking the crossbar from a set-piece. Yet, Atletico remained patient and struck again in the 70th minute. Matteo Ruggeri provided a pinpoint cross from the left, which substitute Alexander Sorloth volleyed home from close range to double the lead. The discipline shown by Simeone’s side ensured that stand-in goalkeeper Juan Musso kept a clean sheet, frustrating the reigning Spanish leaders until the final whistle.

The winner of this prestigious tie is slated to face either Arsenal or Sporting in the semifinals. While Antoine Griezmann urged caution after the match, Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo remained defiant, insisting his team can still turn the tie around. For now, Atletico holds all the cards as they look to secure their spot in the final four.

Do you think Barcelona can overcome a two-goal deficit away from home without a key defender like Cubarsi?
