Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain proved far too strong for Liverpool on Wednesday night, securing a 2-0 victory at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal. Goals from Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia provided Luis Enrique’s side with a commanding cushion, leaving the English giants with a mountain to climb ahead of the return leg at Anfield next week.

The match began with a statement of intent from the hosts, as Doué broke the deadlock in the 11th minute with a curled effort that took a slight deflection off Ryan Gravenberch, leaving goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili helpless. Liverpool, still reeling from a heavy weekend defeat to Manchester City, struggled to find any rhythm. Arne Slot’s experimental back-three system failed to offer the necessary security, and for the first time in a major European fixture this season, the Reds failed to register a single shot on target throughout the entire 90 minutes.

The second half saw PSG continue their relentless pressure. The decisive moment came in the 65th minute when Kvaratskhelia embarked on a breathtaking solo run, weaving through the Liverpool defense before rounding the keeper to slot home. While PSG hit the woodwork through Ousmane Dembélé and missed several late opportunities to extend the lead further, their tactical superiority remained evident. Liverpool will now need a “miracle at Anfield” similar to their historic European nights if they are to overturn this two-goal deficit and progress to the semifinals.

The winner of this high-stakes tie is set to face either Manchester City or Bayer Leverkusen in the next round. For PSG, the result reinforces their status as the team to beat in Europe this season.

Do you think Liverpool’s decision to start Mohamed Salah on the bench was the primary reason for their lack of attacking threat?
