Arsenal took a vital step toward the Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday night as a late strike from substitute Kai Havertz secured a 1-0 win over Sporting in Lisbon. The first leg of this quarterfinal was a tactical battle of attrition, but the Gunners displayed the mental fortitude needed to bounce back from recent domestic setbacks. The victory at the Estádio José Alvalade provides Mikel Arteta’s side with a slender but significant advantage heading into the return leg in London.

The match was a cagey affair from the outset, with both sides striking the woodwork in the first half. Noni Madueke went closest for the visitors, seeing his header clip the bar, while Sporting’s Maxi Araujo saw a powerful effort rebound off the post. Arsenal appeared to have taken the lead after the hour mark through Martin Zubimendi, but the goal was ultimately overturned by VAR for an offside in the build-up. Despite the frustration, the North African side remained composed, largely thanks to a Player of the Match performance from goalkeeper David Raya, who produced several world-class saves to keep the hosts at bay.

The game’s decisive moment arrived in added time when Gabriel Martinelli found Havertz unmarked inside the penalty area. The German forward, who had replaced the injured Martin Odegaard, calmly slotted the ball past Rui Silva to silence the home crowd. While the result marks a successful return to winning ways after a difficult week, the sight of Odegaard limping off will be a point of concern for the coaching staff as the season reaches its climax.

With the second leg looming, the winner of this tie is set to face either Barcelona or Atlético Madrid. For now, the Gunners turn their attention back to domestic duties as they look to maintain their position at the top of the table.

Do you think Arsenal can maintain their lead in the second leg without Martin Odegaard on the pitch?
