Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has voiced concern that her latest social media trend, inspired by her new single Hot Body, could fuel conspiracy theories about her.
The Mavin Records singer, who recently joined Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, said she hopes the sensual dance challenge linked to the track will not attract allegations of witchcraft or “mami water” ties.
“I better not get any mami water allegation because of this hot body video,” Ayra Starr wrote on X.
The Hot Body challenge encourages young women to dance and flaunt their figures while the track plays in the background. However, it has sparked criticism, with fellow singer Jaywon questioning her fashion choices and asking if she lacked parental guidance.
Ayra Starr’s fears come amid growing scrutiny of Nigerian pop stars over controversial stagecraft and visuals. In 2023, her label mate Rema was accused of using “Illuminati symbols” during his headline show at London’s O2 Arena. He later clarified that the props and masks were replicas of Benin cultural artifacts, dismissing suggestions of devil worship.
Ayra Starr’s Hot Body marks her first release under Roc Nation, a milestone that has further amplified public attention on her career.
