British-Nigerian singer Darkoo has declared that women remain the key force behind the popularity of global music genres, arguing that many hit songs only gain traction because women embrace them first.

Speaking on the Comfortably Speaking podcast, the Favourite Girl hitmaker asserted that women dictate what dominates playlists and clubs, often influencing men to play or enjoy songs they initially overlook.

Darkoo highlighted the South African sound, Amapiano, as an example, stressing that its global breakthrough began when women championed it through dance challenges on social media.

“The truth of the matter is music, the world in general, is dictated by women,” Darkoo said. “A lot of music you like is because women like it. I feel like women got into Amapiano first when they were doing dance trends on social media. Back then, people thought it was weird, but now men are vibing to it.”

She added that men frequently adapt their playlists to impress women, noting that female influence has become a silent but powerful driver of what thrives in the music industry.
