Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, has described the death of Prof. Eleazer Ikonne, PDP Governorship Candidate for Abia State, as shocking.

He expressed his condolences to Nigerians, particularly PDP members, for the untimely death of a man he described as a true friend and thoroughbred academic.

Ayu stated this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja.

“Until his death in the early hours of today, the professor of optometry was the PDP Governorship Candidate in Abia state for the 2023 general elections,” he said.

“He was a true friend, a loving father, and a devoted husband who valued family above all else.

“He was a well-bred academic as well as an accomplished administrator.

“It is a testament to his leadership abilities that he was appointed (on a rescue mission) as rector of the state-owned Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, between 2014 and 2015. He was also named the 7th Substantive Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University in December 2015.

“Upon his retirement from the ivory tower, Ikonne joined the PDP, and was subsequently elected its Gubernatorial Candidate for the March 11 2023 governorship election.

“I extend my heart-felt condolences to his family ,the Government and people of Abia State as well as the PDP Family nationwide, particularly the Abia State Chapter.

“I beseech God Almighty to grant him eternal rest and to grant the family the strength to bear the irreparable loss.”
