Bandits kill nine farmers in Kaduna after armed attackers stormed farmlands in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, opening fire on farmers and abducting several others, according to a security report seen by AFP.
The attack happened on Saturday near Kakangi village during the rainy season, when many residents are cultivating their farms. The report, prepared for the United Nations, said security officials recovered nine bodies, while local authorities identified six of the victims. However, a community leader said the death toll had risen to 10.
According to the report, the gunmen launched the assault in retaliation after farmers reportedly killed one of their members during a failed robbery attempt earlier in the day. The surviving attacker allegedly returned with reinforcements and carried out the deadly raid.
Meanwhile, community leader Kabiru Ishaq, who visited the village to sympathise with grieving families, said the attackers also kidnapped several residents, leaving many families uncertain about the fate of their loved ones.
However, bandits kill nine farmers in Kaduna despite a peace agreement brokered by local authorities in November 2024 to reduce violence in Birnin Gwari. Residents say attacks on farming communities have continued, raising fresh concerns about security and food production.
Last month, gunmen reportedly killed at least six farmers and abducted about 20 others during another attack on Danauta village in the same district.
Consequently, the latest killings have renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect farming communities across northern Nigeria. Farmers fear continued violence could discourage cultivation during the rainy season, threatening food supplies and livelihoods.
