In response to escalating tensions and violent confrontations between farmers and herders in Darazo Local Government Area, the Bauchi State Government has inaugurated a high-level investigative committee to uncover the root causes of the conflict and develop a pathway toward lasting peace. The clashes, which occurred in the forests of Aliya, Yautare, and Farin Ruwa, have resulted in the tragic loss of lives and destruction of property.
The committee was inaugurated shortly after Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed visited the affected communities in a peace-building effort. His visit aimed to defuse tensions and reaffirm his administration’s commitment to peaceful coexistence among all residents of the state.
Chaired by Deputy Governor Rt Hon Muhammad Auwal Jatau, the committee has been entrusted with a comprehensive mandate. It is expected to identify both immediate and underlying causes of the violence, determine the extent of damages, and assess the impact on victims. The committee will also identify those responsible for the attacks and recommend appropriate legal actions, including prosecution and penalties. A critical aspect of its mission is to resolve the long-standing issue of land ownership and usage by overseeing the demarcation of disputed lands.
The panel’s composition reflects a multi-stakeholder approach, bringing together members of the State House of Assembly representing Darazo and Sade constituencies, senior government officials such as the Principal Private Secretary to the Governor, Commissioners of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lands and Survey, and Internal Security. Also included are traditional leaders such as the Sarkin Fulanin Sade and representatives from both the Fulani and farming communities, ensuring that all affected parties have a voice in the resolution process.
While inaugurating the committee at the Government House, Deputy Governor Jatau urged members to perform their duties with diligence, fairness, and impartiality. He highlighted the importance of transparency and community trust in the fact-finding process. “This committee must go beyond surface-level investigations and seek lasting solutions that reflect the diverse interests of our communities,” he said.
The committee is expected to submit a detailed report within two weeks. Its findings will play a crucial role in shaping the state government’s next steps toward conflict resolution, community support, and enhanced security in the region.
Governor Bala Mohammed’s proactive response underscores his administration’s zero tolerance for violence and its dedication to fostering peace among the various ethnic and occupational groups in Bauchi. His visit to the crisis areas and the swift formation of the investigative committee signal a strong commitment to protecting lives, ensuring justice, and promoting long-term stability.
