It has come to light that Irish actor Barry Keoghan, who is up for his first Oscar, had a very tough childhood and spent barely seven years in 13 different foster homes.

The Banshees of Inisherin’s Dominic Kearney, played by the 30-year-old earlier this week, earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor, prompting admirers to talk about his modest beginnings.

At the age of 12, Keoghan initially joined the foster care system shortly after his mother, who had been struggling with heroin addiction, passed away.

The Dunkirk actor and his brother Eric were relocated to 13 different homes before being eventually nurtured by his grandmother and older sister Gemma.

When speaking about his difficult upbringing, he said to The Irish Times: “I have gone through… It was not very pleasant. You are a strong man because of that. You are far better able to handle things as a result.

Keoghan spent a lot of his early years sneaking into the neighborhood theater with friends in an effort to escape his difficult upbringing.

The actor developed his passion of movies here.

However, the Oscar candidate didn’t think about acting until he was 19 years old and noticed a casting call in a store window.

He responded, and amazingly, despite only having experience acting in school plays, he managed to land his first role in the independent crime film Between the Canals.

Keoghan struggled to make ends meet while attending The Factory, a drama school in Dublin, but he was determined to follow his dream of becoming a filmmaker.

He vividly recalled “not even having €2.20 to get the bus to The Factory,” he told The Irish Independent.

The actor has maintained his modesty about his accomplishment despite his quick ascent to popularity because to performances in critically acclaimed dramas like Dunkirk, The Batman, and Chernobyl.

“Fame isn’t how I define success. Being happy for me means ensuring that everyone else is as well, he continued.

In addition to his most recent Oscar nomination, Keoghan has received a number of honors in the past, including the Bafta’s EE Rising Star in 2019.

Although it is uncertain whether Keoghan will receive an Academy Award for The Banshees of Inisherin, the actor unquestionably has a promising future.

Alongside actor Robert Pattinson, the celebrity is also eager to return to his little role as the Joker in The Batman sequel.

After director Matt Reeves shared a deleted scene from the Joker scene involving Keoghan at Arkham Asylum, fans have also been calling for the actor to feature in upcoming DC movies.

In an interview with The New York Times, Keoghan discussed the DC universe and said, “I already have a backstory that I’ve constructed in case that [The Batman 2] does happen – a whole fresh way of playing him.”
