A leading governorship aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, Aishatu Ahmed Binani, has fiercely condemned the conduct of state, local government, and ward congresses carried out in defiance of a court order.
Addressing a large crowd of supporters drawn from all 21 local government areas at a gathering in Yola on Monday, Binani questioned the credibility and legality of the congresses, insisting they violated a directive issued by the High Court.
The Adamawa State High Court had earlier ordered a suspension of the exercise following a suit filed by the state chairman of the party, Yohanna Shehu, who accused the ADC Congress Committee of sidelining him and his executive in the planning process.
Despite the court’s order, an ADC committee went ahead with the congresses over the weekend, triggering outrage within party ranks and raising fresh concerns about internal democracy.
Speaking at the rally held at Lamido Cinema, Binani urged her supporters to remain calm but resolute, stressing that the final position would depend on the court’s ruling.
She noted that while the party must respect judicial authority, members should be prepared for all possible outcomes, especially if the congresses are nullified but the committee insists on recognising those elected during the disputed process.
“If the court eventually decides that the conduct of the congresses is okay despite the order suspending them, we should accept it,” she said.
The court, in its ruling, directed all parties to maintain the status quo pending the determination of the substantive suit and adjourned proceedings to April 15.
The development has intensified political tension within the ADC in Adamawa, as stakeholders await the court’s decision, which could reshape the party’s structure ahead of future elections.
