Bosnia and Herzegovina boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a convincing 3-1 victory over Qatar in Seattle on Wednesday.

The European side delivered a strong performance, with Kerim Alajbegivic and Ermin Mahmic finding the net, while an own goal from Qatar further strengthened Bosnia’s advantage.

The important victory lifted Bosnia and Herzegovina to four points in the standings. Combined with a goal difference of minus one, the result is expected to be enough to secure qualification for the World Cup round of 32.

Bosnia approached the match knowing that a positive result could significantly improve their chances of progressing, and they responded with an organised and determined display. Their attacking play created several problems for the Asian champions, who struggled to contain the pressure throughout key periods of the contest.

Kerim Alajbegivic opened the scoring to give Bosnia early momentum before Ermin Mahmic added another goal to place his side firmly in control. Qatar’s difficulties increased when an unfortunate own goal further widened the gap and left them facing an uphill task.

Although Qatar managed to score once, the response came too late to alter the outcome. Bosnia remained disciplined and protected their lead to secure a crucial three points in the FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign.

For Qatar, the defeat marked a disappointing end to their tournament journey. The Asian champions suffered a second consecutive loss, a result that officially ended their hopes of advancing beyond the group stage.

The victory leaves Bosnia and Herzegovina in a strong position ahead of the knockout rounds, while Qatar departs the competition after failing to recover from back-to-back defeats.
