The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has filed a lawsuit against former Senator Andy Uba, who represented Anambra South, and two other individuals, accusing them of involvement in a ₦400 million fraud. The lawsuit, filed before Justice Inyang Ekwo at the Federal High Court in Abuja, includes two counts and names Crystal Uba and Benjamin Etu as the second and third defendants.

The charge was filed on October 10, 2024, by Abdulrashid Sidi, in the Legal/Prosecution Section at the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja. The allegations center around an incident in 2022, where Uba, Crystal Uba, Etu, and Hajiya Fatima (currently at large) are accused of conspiring to defraud George Uboh. They allegedly falsely claimed to have a method for ensuring the appointment of anyone willing to pay ₦400 million as the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

In the first count, the defendants are accused of making a fraudulent presentation to George Uboh, knowing it to be false, in violation of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud-Related Offences Act, 2006. The second count further accuses them of defrauding Uboh by obtaining the ₦400 million under false pretenses and converting it for personal use.

Uboh, in his petition to the IGP dated April 5, 2023, provided documentary and voice recordings as evidence, describing the proof as irrefutable. Six witnesses are expected to testify against the defendants in the case.

The trial has been adjourned to February 18, 2025, following delays in the arraignment. These delays were attributed to the defendants’ evasion of service of court documents despite being granted administrative bail and a fundamental rights enforcement order obtained by the defendants, which had initially prevented their appearance in court.
