The allegation by a national daily that the former President had left the country and was currently in exile was dismissed as false Friday night by Mallam Garba Shehu, the spokesman for former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The former president Buhari recently congratulated President Bola Tinubu on becoming the new head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and at the same time.
In response to a newspaper report that said Buhari had left the country after handing over to President Tinubu, Shehu said the claim lacked credibility and asked media outlets to verify all of their information.
He claimed that Buhari was in his native Daura, in Katsina state, with his family.
He stated, “For misleading the otherwise credible newspaper to falsely report on their front page that former President Muhammadu Buhari has “fled” and is on “exile” when he is currently at home in Daura, Katsina State, with family, BusinessDay newspaper should sack their reporter who didn’t do his job of checking his facts.
Before publishing any material from a certain reporter, BusinessDay should ten times overthink it and double-check it before believing him. Every platform has methods to validate any material, and we don’t anticipate BusinessDay to be any different.
“If they had looked through other sources, they would have found stories that the former President had returned home and was spending time with his family.
“A single false report in a newspaper has the power to demolish a reputation cultivated over many years of toil.”
