-Super Falcons face Tunisia in group clash on Sunday

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant increase in prize money for the 2024 edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), marking a bold step toward promoting women’s football on the continent.

According to CAF, the champions of WAFCON 2024 will now walk away with a whopping $1 million — a massive boost aimed at rewarding excellence and encouraging competition. The runners-up will take home $500,000, while the team finishing third will receive $350,000.

CAF added that the increased financial reward will also reflect in the bonuses of all participating teams, making the tournament more financially competitive than ever.

Twelve nations are set to battle for glory in Morocco. Group A features the hosts Morocco, Zambia, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Group B is home to Nigeria’s Super Falcons, alongside Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria. Defending champions South Africa, Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania make up Group C.

The tournament kicks off this Saturday with hosts Atlas Lionesses of Morocco facing the Copper Queens of Zambia. Nigeria, the record champions with nine titles, will open their campaign against Tunisia on Sunday in Casablanca. On Monday, Banyana Banyana of South Africa will begin their title defence against Ghana’s Black Queens.

As anticipation builds, all eyes will be on Nigeria’s Super Falcons to see if they can extend their dominance and claim a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
