-Super Falcons striker vows to reclaim continental crown
-Bay FC star returns after year-long absence to lead attack
Asisat Oshoala has set her sights on helping Nigeria’s Super Falcons reclaim the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title as the 2024 tournament kicks off this weekend in Morocco.
Oshoala, 30, who plays for Bay FC in the United States, will be making her fifth appearance at WAFCON. She has already lifted the trophy three times with the Super Falcons and is eager to add another to her collection.
The six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year missed most of the last edition due to injury, featuring in only one match as South Africa snatched the crown from Nigeria—ironically on Moroccan soil.
Now fully fit and back in the national squad after more than a year out, Oshoala says she is determined to make her mark both on and off the pitch.
“For me personally, I want to score goals—it’s what I love to do,” Oshoala told NFF TV. “It’s been a while since I’ve played with the national team because there’s so many things going on in my personal life. But whenever I’m here, I’m here to help my teammates and get the three points in each game we play.”
Nigeria will open their WAFCON 2024 finals campaign against Tunisia in Casablanca on Sunday, July 7.
The tournament itself kicks off on Saturday, July 5, with hosts Morocco facing Zambia in Rabat. The finals will run through Saturday, July 26.
Oshoala’s return is seen as a major boost for the Super Falcons as they look to reassert their dominance in women’s football on the continent.
