The shocking details of the alleged murder of Ummukulsum Sani, a woman from Kano, by her Chinese boyfriend Geng Quangrong, came to light on Friday as police released the official version of the incident.
The Chinese national has been prosecuted by the administration of Kano State with culpable homicide for allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend at her Janbulo Quarters in the city’s Kabuga neighborhood.
After being provoked into attacking him physically, Mr. Quangrong admitted to inflicting a deep cut on Ummukulsum’s shudder at the resumption of the witness hearing before Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji of the state high court.

Quangrong stated in a confessional statement given to the police that he was obliged to act in self-defense after being physically attacked by the late Ummukulsum and her entire family, who descended on him. Quangrong denied having any deliberate purpose to kill Ummukulsum.
According to Quangrong’s confession, which was read aloud in court by Inspector Ijuptil Mbambu, a detective with the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the marriage he spent a fortune on never happened.
Quangrong explained in a statement how he transferred N80 million into Ummukulsum’s account to fund the construction of a home, a company, and other essentials.
The Chinese national said that Ummukulsum fled to Abuja in March 2022 with another man after the marriage proposal fell through. After her new relationship with the Abuja spouse did not last longer than two months, Ummukulsum had returned to Kano and enticed Quangrong back into the relationship two months later.
“I was left out in the rain for several hours until I heard Ummukulsum knocking on the door that evening. The door was not opened by the household. One of Ummukulsum’s siblings eventually arrived to open the door but was only allowed inside to retrieve the dog the visitor had brought.
“I was later permitted to speak with Ummukulsum in the room where she was seated. I was attacked by the entire family as soon as I entered the room, who also gave my hands and neck cuts and bruises. At that point, I stabbed Ummukulsum twice in the shoulder with my personal knife, which I carry for personal defense.
“Prior to that time, I transferred N60 million to Ummukulsum’s GTBank account for investments, N8 million for her Sokoto schooling, N4 million to purchase a home, and another N18 million for a company. However, when I went to Ummukulsum, I found that there were no shops or cars, according to Quangrong’s confession.
Asiya Sani, the young sister of the late Ummukulsum, who also testified in court, described how the Chinese national is said to have fatally stabbed her sister.
“The Chinese Man followed my Sister into a room while she was making calls and shut the inner room and the sitting room. At that point, we walked to the inner room window peeping and I saw Mr. Geng holding a knife and on top of my Sister who was on a bed stabbing her with it,” my sister said.
Asiya said, “At the time, in great dread, I hurriedly rush outside and immediately begin calling for assistance with my siblings and our mother, who was already outside the House seeking assistance. Mr. Geng left my sister’s lifeless body behind after realizing the consequences of what he had done and exited the room through the window.
“At that point, our neighbors had swooped in and detained him, whereupon they turned him over to the Police. Meanwhile, myself and two other people had taken my sister to the hospital, but upon first glance, she was not moving. The doctor told us that it happened at the hospital. Asiya provided the narration.
The case had been postponed by Justice Ma’aji until the 19th, 20th, and 21st of December 2022 so that the hearing and defense could continue.
