The administration of the Federal Capital Territory has moved to reassure the public following a destructive weather event at the newly constructed Kugbo Bus Terminal. On Wednesday, Lere Olayinka, the media aide to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, confirmed that the contractor responsible for the facility’s construction will take full responsibility for all necessary repairs. This statement comes after a violent rainstorm on Tuesday afternoon caused significant structural damage to the terminal, sparking concerns regarding the integrity of the project.

The incident occurred during a heavy downpour accompanied by fierce winds, which tore through sections of the terminal’s roof and sent debris spilling onto the Abuja–Keffi Expressway. The resulting rubble created a massive gridlock along the Kugbo–Nyanya road corridor, leaving many motorists stranded for up to three hours. In response to the chaos, Minister Nyesom Wike immediately directed the deployment of security personnel and officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to manage the traffic and begin clearing the highway.

The damage has sparked a heated debate on social media regarding the quality of the N32 billion project. Responding to critics, Olayinka defended the Nigerian contractor, asserting that the facility would be restored to its proper state. He emphasized that the terminal remains a vital piece of infrastructure that will provide a livelihood for many Nigerians, despite the setback caused by the elements. Eyewitnesses at the scene noted that while the damage was extensive, it was fortunate that the terminal was not yet fully operational, which likely prevented potential injuries to passengers.

As cleanup efforts continue in the Federal Capital Territory, the focus remains on ensuring the terminal is reinforced against future weather events. The FCT administration has reiterated its commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure that meets the needs of the growing population in the nation’s capital.

Do you think that the government should conduct an independent structural audit of all new bus terminals to ensure they can withstand extreme weather?
