The Vice Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area, Grace Ogunleye, has been remanded by a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ado-Ekiti over allegations that she staged her own kidnapping.
Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun gave the order on Wednesday after Ogunleye appeared before the court on several charges related to the alleged incident. The court directed that she be taken to the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre pending further legal proceedings.
The magistrate also ordered that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal review and advice before the matter proceeds further.
According to reports, Ogunleye was declared missing on May 20, 2026, after she was allegedly abducted along the Ipere–Iludun Ekiti Road. Her vehicle was later found abandoned by the roadside, triggering a large-scale search operation involving the Nigeria Police Force, military personnel and local security operatives.
The operation ended the following day when she was found safe. However, police investigations reportedly uncovered evidence suggesting that the alleged staged kidnapping was planned to generate funds for financial obligations and political commitments.
The development led to her arrest and eventual arraignment before the court.
The case has now been adjourned while authorities await the DPP’s legal advice on the matter.
Reacting to the incident, Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government, Pius Dada, condemned the alleged act, describing it as embarrassing and damaging to public confidence in government institutions.
He maintained that public office holders must remain accountable for their actions and stressed that no individual would be shielded from justice if found guilty of wrongdoing.
The case has attracted significant attention in Ekiti State, with many residents closely monitoring developments as investigations continue into the alleged staged kidnapping and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
