Chinyere Raman, a mother of five, was found guilty and given a 10-year prison sentence by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos for her involvement in the promotion of prostitution and human trafficking.
After finding Raman guilty of charges related to encouraging prostitution, exploiting, and trafficking one Chioma Osademen to Libya for prostitution, Justice Awogboro committed Raman to prison.
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) legal team presented the convict in court in 2019 on a two-count accusation bordering on the offenses.
The victim, Chioma Osademon, was brought by the defendant to be exploited and sold as a prostitute for the price of 300,000 Libyan dinars, NAPTIP had informed the court.
Additionally, the agency had informed the judge that the defendant was detained on February 22, 2019, as she arrived back from Libya at Lagos’ Muritala Mohammed International Airport.
Portion 18 and Section 21 of the Trafficking In Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administrative Act, 2015 were allegedly breached by the offenses, and that section of the Act provided for punishment.
When the defendant was brought before the court, she entered a plea of not guilty to the accusation.
The prosecution launched its case after she entered a plea, called witnesses, and presented a number of evidence. While the defendant gave a defense testimony.
Justice Awogboro ruled that the prosecution had successfully established beyond a reasonable doubt each of the two counts against the convict.
As a result, Justice Awogboro gave the defendant a five-year sentence on each count.
However, the judge ruled that the jail terms should start on February 22, 2019, the day the offender was detained, and run concurrently.
