Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has clarified that his vast fortune was not inherited but painstakingly built from scratch.
In a Bloomberg interview that resurfaced online on Tuesday, the Nigerian billionaire said although his father was “fairly rich” as a businessman and politician, he made a conscious decision not to rely on family wealth.
Dangote explained that he donated every asset he inherited from his father to charity, insisting that his current empire is a product of his own vision and hard work.
“One thing that I’m very, very proud of is that I did not inherit any money from my father. I built everything from scratch to get to where I am. Whatever I inherited from him, which means in assets, I gave that on to charity since then,” he said.
According to Forbes, Dangote’s net worth stood at $23.9 billion in 2024, cementing his status as Africa’s wealthiest individual.
