Dani Alves, a former defender for Barcelona and Brazil who has been imprisoned on remand for more than six months for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in December, was officially charged by a Spanish judge on Wednesday.
The 40-year-old athlete, who believes he had consensual sex with his accuser, was accused of wrongdoing, according to the investigating judge, who claimed to have uncovered evidence of it. He was detained on January 20 and is currently being imprisoned without bail in a prison outside of Barcelona.
A conviction in Spain can result in prison terms of four to 15 years and is examined under the general accusation of sexual assault.
