Nigerian singer Davido plans to buy back music masters from Sony before retiring from the music industry. The award-winning artiste revealed the plan while speaking on The Long Form podcast.

Davido, whose real name is David Adeleke, stressed that ownership remains one of the most important aspects of the music business. He said he intends to regain control of his catalogue from Sony and secure a financial future for his children.

According to him, Davido plans to buy back music masters from Sony so he can transfer the earnings from his songs to his children after retirement.

“I have a good music contract. But the most important thing is ownership. I plan to get my masters back from Sony soon. With that I can give each of my kid songs they will keep earning royalties from even after I retire,” he said.

Furthermore, the singer urged artistes to pay closer attention to the business side of music. He argued that ownership of music rights can provide long-term financial benefits beyond an artist’s active career.

The revelation comes as more musicians around the world seek greater control over their recordings and publishing rights. In recent years, several high-profile artistes have either acquired or fought to regain ownership of their music catalogues.

Meanwhile, Davido plans to buy back music masters from Sony as part of a broader effort to build a lasting legacy for his family while maintaining control of his creative work.
