The Federal Government has renewed its commitment to addressing the welfare, remuneration and pension concerns of Nigeria’s military veterans.

Defence Minister Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.) gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by representatives of military veterans to the Ministry of Defence at Ship House, Abuja, on Wednesday.

Represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Richard Pheelangwah, Musa recognised the sacrifices and distinguished service of the veterans, stressing that their welfare remains a government priority.

According to a statement by the ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, H. O. Ogubike, the minister said concerns surrounding wage and pension adjustments were receiving urgent attention.

He explained that relevant military, pension and financial authorities were working together to develop a fair and sustainable solution that would ensure veterans were not disadvantaged.

Musa appealed for patience and encouraged the veterans to maintain constructive discussions with the government. He said continued dialogue offered the best path towards resolving outstanding issues while protecting the dignity and honour of those who served the country.

The minister also stressed that any changes to veterans’ entitlements must undergo proper calculations, receive adequate funding and comply with existing approvals, regulations and due process. He said this would promote sustainability and prevent unintended differences in benefit payments.

Musa assured the veterans that the Ministry of Defence would continue engaging their representatives and provide updates as efforts to resolve the concerns progress.

He added that the government valued the patriotism, courage and sacrifices of military veterans and remained committed to ensuring their service receives meaningful recognition through sustained attention to their welfare and legitimate entitlements.

Do you think the government’s renewed commitment can resolve the outstanding welfare and pension concerns of military veterans?
