Diphtheria outbreak in Niger State kills 17 as cases rise

A diphtheria outbreak in Niger State has killed 17 people in seven months, with 124 cases recorded in Bida, Suleja and Shiroro local government areas.

Health Commissioner Murtala Muhammad Bagana said 103 patients had recovered and left hospital, while three new cases were recently identified.

One patient remains on admission as authorities step up surveillance, treatment, immunisation and public awareness.

Disease Control Director Samuel Jiya blamed low vaccination coverage for the diphtheria outbreak in Niger State. He said some affected children received only one dose of the pentavalent vaccine, while others had never been vaccinated.

Meanwhile, the state recorded 31 measles cases this year. Nine tested positive and received treatment, while two people died.
