In the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential campaign, Nikki Haley turned things around with a big win over former President Donald Trump in the Washington, DC primary. This was Haley’s first victory over him in this election cycle.

According to CBS reporting, Haley, the former US ambassador to the UN, received 62.9% of the vote versus Trump’s 33.2%. With her win, Haley was given all 19 Republican delegates that were available in Washington, DC, increasing her total to 43 delegates nationwide—though she is still short of Trump’s 247 delegates.

With only roughly 23,000 registered Republicans in Washington, DC, the Democratic-leaning population makes the victory primarily symbolic, but it hasn’t gone unnoticed. There were about 2,035 Republicans that took part in the primary, according to the Washington Post. The significance of this victory was highlighted by Olivia Perez-Cubas, the campaign spokesman for Haley, who said, “It’s not surprising that Republicans closest to Washington dysfunction are rejecting Donald Trump and all his chaos.”

With Haley’s victory in the DC primary, she became the first female Republican primary winner in US history, making the victory a historic occasion. Her 2024 campaign has been difficult, though, as evidenced by her defeat in her home state of South Carolina, which highlights the obstacles she must overcome inside the party.

This move highlights a significant turning point in the Republican primary contest and illustrates how dynamic and frequently unexpected political campaigns can be. All eyes will be on the candidates as Super Tuesday draws near, as they compete for votes on what is regarded as the most important day of the nomination process.
