Tunji Wusu –

Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has been ordered by a Federal Capital Territory High Court to appear in court within a week or be released.

The former CBN governor should be released on bail, according to the presiding judge, Hamza Muazu, if he is not brought before an appropriate court within a week.

“Although I sympathize with the applicant (Emefiele), I cannot give judgment by granting all of the reliefs requested by the applicant due to my sentiments.

That the applicant’s arrest, custody, and inquiry were illegal has not been established. The application does have some merit, though, which worries me. The applicant has a right to a fair trial.

In the lack of any charges against the applicant, his continuing imprisonment at this time cannot be supported. Justice requires, at the very least, that the applicant be released on administrative bail.
