The Premier League announced on Friday that Everton has lost 10 points for violating the profitability and sustainability criteria (PSR) for the 2021–2022 season.
After an independent committee imposed an immediate deduction, Everton will now be in the relegation zone, ahead of Burnley, the bottom team, on goal difference, having fallen from 14th place in the rankings.
The Merseyside club was the target of a complaint lodged by the Premier League earlier this year, which it then forwarded to the independent panel.
The league released a statement saying, “During the proceedings, the club admitted it was in breach of the PSRs for the period ending season 2021/22, but the extent of the breach remained in dispute.”
As argued by the Premier League, the Commission found that Everton FC’s PSR Calculation for the relevant period resulted in a loss of 124.5 million pounds ($154.70 million), above the 105 million pounds allowed under the PSRs.
Everton declared that the penalty was “wholly disproportionate and unjust” and that it will be appealing the ruling to the Premier League.
“Everton insists that it has always respected the integrity of the process and that it has been open and transparent in the information it has provided to the Premier League,” the statement read.
“The club does not acknowledge the conclusion that it did not behave in the best interest of the game, and it does not believe that the Premier League made this claim at any point throughout the proceedings.
“Neither the severity nor the harshness of the sanction imposed by the Commission fairly reflect the evidence that was submitted.”
