Nigerian singer Chidozie Godsfavour Ugochinyere, popularly known as Fave, says female artists in Nigeria’s music industry face tougher standards because audiences and industry players often judge them beyond their music.

Fave made the claim during a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast. She argued that talent alone does not always determine how female musicians are received.

According to the singer, female artists in Nigeria’s music industry often face scrutiny over their appearance, fashion choices and sex appeal.

She said these expectations can overshadow their musical ability. As a result, she believes female performers must deal with pressures that their male counterparts may not face to the same extent.

Fave also criticised the focus on physical appearance. She said people can assess a female artist’s looks and clothing before paying attention to her songs.

However, she argued that male artists are generally not subjected to the same level of scrutiny over their appearance.

The singer’s comments highlight a wider debate about gender and representation in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Meanwhile, female musicians have continued to build successful careers across Afrobeats, R&B, gospel and other genres. Their achievements have also increased discussions about the challenges women face while pursuing careers in music.

For Fave, however, the issue goes beyond individual success. She believes the industry should pay greater attention to musical talent rather than placing additional expectations on women because of their gender.

The comments have added to ongoing conversations about how female performers are presented, promoted and judged in Nigeria.
