Turkish giants Fenerbahce have officially dismissed their manager, Domenico Tedesco, following a painful weekend on the pitch. The decision came on Monday after the team suffered a heavy 3-0 loss to their fierce rivals, Galatasaray. This defeat was a major blow, as it effectively ended the club’s dreams of winning the Super Lig title this year. Tedesco had only been with the club since September, having signed a two-year contract to replace Jose Mourinho.
Although the team has only lost two league matches all season, the recent derby defeat was the final straw for the board. Fenerbahce now sits seven points behind the leaders with only three matches remaining. The club has been desperate to end a long drought, as they have not secured a Super Lig title since 2014. Despite the poor league outlook, Tedesco did manage to lead the squad to a Turkish Super Cup victory in January against the same rivals. However, a disappointing exit from the Europa League against Nottingham Forest added to the pressure on his position.
The club is making a fresh start by also parting ways with sports director Devin Ozek and football coordinator Berke Celebi. This clean sweep shows how much the board values winning the Super Lig title above all else. For the rest of the season, assistant coach Zeki Murat Gole will step up to lead the players. The fans are now looking for stability as the team prepares for its final few fixtures. Everyone at the club hopes a new direction will finally bring the trophy back to their stadium next season.
Do you think sacking a manager with only three games left in the season is a wise move for the club?
