The National Economic Council (NEC) has put the removal of fuel subsidies by June 2023 on hold.
This information was made public by Zaniab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, on Thursday, April 27, 2023, after the NEC meeting, which was presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
The withdrawal of the fuel subsidy as soon as the new administration is attempting to settle down to governing will not be a good choice, according to Ahmed, who claimed that the NEC, which is made up of State Governors, debated on the matter extensively.
In order to allow for more input from concerned Nigerians, she continued, the current committee that has been working on the fuel subsidy issue needed to be expanded.
She stressed the need for increased communication with the NLC and the petroleum merchants’ association, among other groups.
Ahmed continued by saying that the Council concurred that the gasoline subsidy should be eliminated as soon as possible since it was unsustainable.
