FG Renames Lagos-Calabar Highway After Tinubu

The Federal Government has announced that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will now be known as the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway. Minister of Works David Umahi said the ministry approved the new name to recognise President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for conceiving the landmark infrastructure project.

According to Umahi, Tinubu first envisioned the project about 27 years ago while serving as Governor of Lagos State. He said the President not only conceived the idea but also had the opportunity to bring it to life.

“That highway is named President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway. By the powers conferred on me as Minister of Works, in consultation with my Permanent Secretary, the Honourable Minister of State, directors and staff of the ministry, we decided to name it after him because of his dream for it.”

Providing an update on the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway, Umahi said construction is progressing across several sections of the 750-kilometre project. He explained that Section One, stretching from Victoria Island to Eleko Village in Lagos State, covers 47.47 kilometres and includes a 25-metre median reserved for a future railway line.

He added that Section Two, which runs from Eleko Village to the Lagos-Ogun boundary, is about 60 per cent complete and should reach substantial completion by the end of November, apart from ongoing bridge works. Construction is also advancing in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Ogun and Ondo states. Section Three is about 30 per cent complete, while Section Four has reached roughly 20 per cent completion. Work is also continuing on the 180-kilometre Akwa Ibom section.

Umahi also reported progress on the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway and the Trans-Sahara Highway, alongside other legacy road projects aimed at improving transport links, reducing travel time and strengthening economic integration across Nigeria. The President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway remains one of the administration’s flagship infrastructure projects.
