Rivers State governorship has moved to the centre of political debate after the African Democratic Congress (ADC) declared that only the people of Rivers State have the constitutional right to choose the next governor. The party rejected claims that any individual can determine the state’s political future.

In a statement issued on July 15, ADC Rivers State spokesperson Barr. Chizy Enyi said the state “is not the private estate of any political figure.” He argued that democracy gives the power to voters, not political godfathers or influential individuals.

Furthermore, the party warned against attempts to impose candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections. It insisted that Rivers people would defend their votes and resist any effort to undermine free and credible elections.

ADC also urged political stakeholders to abandon intimidation and personality politics. Instead, it called for campaigns built on competence, integrity and clear ideas. According to the party, leadership should emerge through the ballot box rather than political endorsements.

Meanwhile, the party encouraged eligible voters to ignore propaganda and remain confident that every vote carries equal value. It pledged to continue supporting transparent elections and accountable governance across the state.

The statement comes as political activities gradually increase ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties positioning themselves for what is expected to be a keenly contested Rivers State governorship race.
