The Federal Government has re-arraigned former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and his son, Abdulaziz Abubakar Malami, on fresh allegations bordering on terrorism and illegal possession of firearms.
The duo faced a five-count amended charge on Wednesday before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja, as prosecutors moved to tighten their case ahead of trial.
Lead prosecution counsel, Mr. Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, unveiled the new charge, informing the court that it replaces the earlier one already filed. Defence counsel, Mr. Shuaibu Arua, SAN, confirmed receipt of the amended charge and raised no objection, prompting the court to strike out the initial charge and proceed with the new one.
Both defendants pleaded not guilty to all counts.
The defence swiftly urged the court to allow them continue on their earlier bail terms—a request the court granted after the prosecution declined to oppose.
Recall that the court had earlier granted bail of ₦200 million each with two sureties in like sum.
Allegations Against the Defendants
According to the amended charge, the Federal Government accused the defendants of preparing to commit acts of terrorism in December 2025 at Geeze Phase II, Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
They were alleged to have:
- Possessed a Sturm Magnum 17–0101 firearm without a license
- Held 16 live cartridges and 27 expended rounds
- Conspired to commit acts linked to terrorism
The offences were said to contravene provisions of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 and the Firearms Act.
Trial Set to Begin
Justice Abdulmalik has now fixed May 26 for the commencement of trial, when the prosecution is expected to call witnesses and tender evidence to prove its case.
