Five members of Delta State’s All Progressives Congress are believed to have died in a boat accident on Tuesday night along the Gbaramatu-Warri river.
Others are currently being treated in hospitals for injuries incurred in the marine tragedy.
The boat disaster involved party members and supporters returning from the party’s Governorship rally earlier in the day in the towns of Okerenkoko and Ugborodo in the Warri South West Local Government Area.
According to reports, a commercial boat moving in the opposite direction collided with the boat carrying APC supporters, causing it to capsize.
As a result, two people reportedly died instantly, three drowned, and seven others were hospitalized for injuries received in the tragedy.
Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Deputy President of the Senate and Delta APC governorship candidate, expressed sorrow and anguish over the incident and offered prayers for the repose of the victims’ souls.
“We are devastated by this tragedy, and our hearts are heavy,” said Ima Niboro, Director of the Delta APC Governorship Campaign Council, in a statement made available to journalists in Warri on Wednesday. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. This is one too many tragedies for our party, and we are officially in mourning.
“We are presently collaborating with the pertinent government agencies and local communities to look for the missing. While ensuring that the injured receive the finest care possible, we are also working to get in touch with the families and loved ones of those who passed away.
“We have chosen to halt all future campaigns indefinitely in memory of the lost, missing, and hurt. In the upcoming days and weeks, the Campaign Council will provide guidance on the next steps.
We once more offer our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased, and we pray that the Almighty would console them and give them strength during this difficult time.
DSP Bright Edafe, the Delta State Command’s police public relations officer, could not be reached for comment on the incident at the time of reporting this story.
