Fresh political tension has erupted after Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, openly urged a federal lawmaker to remain within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and “cause problems” from within.

Gbajabiamila made the remark during a birthday celebration organised by House of Representatives member, Leke Abejide, who is aligned with the Nafiu Gombe-led faction of the party.

In a statement that has since stirred reactions, the Chief of Staff praised Abejide for what he described as “a great job” in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC), despite the lawmaker’s membership of the ADC.

“Don’t come to APC. Stay in ADC and scatter them. We like what you’re doing,” Gbajabiamila said, urging Abejide to ignore calls from APC members encouraging him to defect.

He also referenced former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, dismissing his suggestion that Abejide should join the ruling party.

The Chief of Staff further hinted at political backing, saying, “Stay in ADC and win your election. Also, bring Bala Gombe, and we’ll support him. Good luck in court.”

The remarks come at a time when the ADC is grappling with deep internal divisions, with the party split into rival factions battling for control and legitimacy.

Political observers say the statement could further intensify the crisis within the opposition party, raising concerns about external interference and the stability of Nigeria’s multi-party system ahead of the 2027 general elections.
