Renowned Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has declared that he would champion calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu if the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) expresses genuine remorse.
Gumi made the remark on Tuesday during an appearance on The Morning Brief, a Channels Television programme. His comment followed last week’s ruling by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on all seven terrorism charges filed against him.
The cleric stressed that repentance and a commitment to peace remain key conditions for his support.
“If Nnamdi Kanu, who is in prison for terrorism and threatening to kill our soldiers, shows remorse and calls for peace, I will be at the forefront calling for his pardoning and amnesty,” Gumi said.
His position adds a new dimension to ongoing national conversations surrounding reconciliation, security, and the future of separatist agitation in Nigeria.
