Gunmen on Wednesday attacked the Old Oyo National Park in the Oke-Ogun geopolitical zone of Oyo State, leaving an unspecified number of people dead.

The attack, which involved heavy gunfire, reportedly targeted personnel of the national park. However, authorities have yet to disclose the exact number of casualties as of the time of filing this report.

The Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident, stating that police and other security agencies had been mobilised to the area.

In a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday afternoon, Ayanlade said the assailants were yet to be identified.

He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Femi Haruna, alongside other service chiefs, was already en route to the scene.

According to him, tactical teams, Mobile Police Force personnel and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit of the Nigeria Police Force have been deployed to the affected area to contain the situation and prevent further breakdown of law and order.

Security operations are ongoing as authorities move to restore calm in the area.
