…Striker reveals why he turned down top clubs
…Arteta lands long-awaited No. 9 after title heartbreak
Sweden international Viktor Gyökeres has officially joined Arsenal, ending weeks of speculation surrounding his future.
The 26-year-old striker completed his medical at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday and signed a long-term contract with the North London club. He will wear the iconic number 14 shirt, once donned by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.
Gyökeres made the move from Portuguese side Sporting CP despite serious interest from several top European clubs. Speaking to Arsenal’s website, the prolific forward explained his decision:
“There were more clubs involved, but I wanted to come here at Arsenal… it’s the best club for me,” he said. “It wasn’t an easy deal. Some people spoke to the media all the time… they thought they were protecting the interest of the club.”
Arsenal had long been on the hunt for a natural striker after narrowly missing out on the Premier League title last season, finishing second behind Liverpool. Many analysts and fans alike believe the absence of a clinical finisher cost Mikel Arteta’s side crucial points in the title race.
With Gyökeres now in the squad, Arteta is expected to restructure Arsenal’s attacking play as they prepare for another title charge and a return to the UEFA Champions League.
